ENGLAND LEAGUE WINNERS 1990-2019
Contrary to popular modern belief, there was a top division of English football long before the FA Premier League was formed on the 20th February 1992. It dates right back to 1888 and was simply called the Football League to start with, before being renamed as the First Division for 100 years from 1892 to 1992.
Liverpool were by far and away the most successful club in the old First Division days with 18 English league titles, but such was the dominance of Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United side from the advent of the Premier League that they won an incredible thirteen out of twenty Premier League seasons. This saw them overtake their rivals and move to a total of twenty titles by 2013.
The English top tier is undoubtedly one of Europe's strongest football leagues, the list of European Cup winners and UEFA Cup winners over the years can testify to that, whether or not it's got a higher quality than every other league is still open to debate, as the very elite players still seem to end up in Spain.
