The Brazilian Football League

The top level of the Brazilian football league system is called the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, known mainly as just Brasileirão. It shares relegation and promotion with the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B.

Given the huge size of Brazil, it's not really any surprise that a national league wasn't actually started until 1959, with the Tara de Brazil. Up until that point Brazilian clubs competed solely in their respective state leagues. The state leagues still run today, and are still prestigious competitions in their own right.
