Mauro da Silva Gomes, commonly known as Mauro Silva, is a retired Brazilian footballer who had a distinguished career playing as a defensive midfielder. Born on January 12, 1968, in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil, Silva began his footballing career with local side São Bernardo before moving on to Bragantino in 1988. It was here that his talents were first noticed, and he soon secured a move to one of Brazil's most prominent clubs, Corinthians.

Silva quickly established himself as a vital member of the Corinthians team and was instrumental in helping them win the Campeonato Brasileiro in 1990. His performances earned him a call-up to the Brazilian national team, and he made his debut in a friendly against Poland in 1991. Silva was part of the Brazilian squad that won the 1994 World Cup, and he played a crucial role in their success. He formed a formidable partnership with fellow defensive midfielder Dunga, and the two were key to Brazil's success in the tournament.

After the World Cup, Silva's career took him to Europe, where he joined Deportivo La Coruña in Spain. He quickly became a fan favourite, and his performances helped the club achieve their best ever league finish in the 1994-95 season. Silva spent a total of eight seasons at Deportivo, during which time he won the Copa del Rey in 1995 and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2003-04.

Silva retired from professional football in 2005, having played for a variety of clubs in Brazil and Spain. In total, he made 83 appearances for the Brazilian national team, scoring two goals.
