Mick McCarthy Profile

Mick McCarthy is a former Irish professional footballer who had a successful playing career in the English leagues. He was known for his tough-tackling style, leadership qualities, and his never-say-die attitude on the pitch. McCarthy played for several clubs throughout his career, both in the English and Scottish leagues, and also represented his country at international level.

McCarthy was born in Barnsley, England, in 1959, but qualified to play for the Republic of Ireland through his Irish parents. He began his career at Barnsley FC, where he made over 300 appearances between 1977 and 1983. McCarthy was a versatile defender who could play in multiple positions across the back four, and he quickly became a fan favourite at Oakwell.

In 1983, McCarthy moved to Manchester City, where he continued to impress with his solid performances at the back. He was appointed captain of the side in 1984 and played a pivotal role in helping City win promotion back to the First Division in 1985.

After four years at City, McCarthy moved to Celtic FC in Scotland, where he played for three seasons. He helped the Glasgow giants win the Scottish Cup in 1988 and also reached the final of the European Cup with the team in the same year.

In 1992, McCarthy returned to England to sign for Millwall FC. He spent three seasons with the London club, helping them reach the final of the League Cup in 1994, where they were beaten by Manchester United.

McCarthy's playing career was capped off by a successful stint at Sunderland AFC. He signed for the club in 1995 and played a key role in their promotion to the Premier League in 1996. McCarthy was appointed player-manager of Sunderland in 1997 and led the team to an impressive seventh-place finish in their first season back in the top flight.

McCarthy retired from playing in 1998 to focus on his managerial career. He went on to manage several clubs, including Sunderland, Wolves, Ipswich Town, and the Republic of Ireland national team. McCarthy's managerial career was just as impressive as his playing career, and he is widely respected as one of the most successful and experienced managers in the game.
