Danny Blanchflower Profile


Danny Blanchflower was a Northern Irish footballer who enjoyed a successful playing career in the 1950s and 1960s. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in Tottenham Hotspur's history and is remembered for his elegance, intelligence, and exceptional footballing ability.

Blanchflower was born in Belfast in 1926 and began his career playing for his local team, Glentoran, before moving to England to sign for Barnsley in 1949. He spent four years with the club, making over 100 appearances, before signing for Aston Villa in 1953.

However, it was at Tottenham Hotspur where Blanchflower truly made his mark. He signed for the London club in 1954 and quickly established himself as a key player in the side. He was an elegant and stylish midfielder who possessed excellent technique and was known for his ability to read the game.

Blanchflower helped Tottenham win the Second Division in 1950, and then went on to win the First Division in 1961. He also played a vital role in the club's famous double-winning season in 1961-62, when Tottenham won both the First Division title and the FA Cup.

As well as his success at club level, Blanchflower also enjoyed a successful international career with Northern Ireland. He won 56 caps for his country, captaining the side at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, where they reached the quarter-finals.

Blanchflower was a cultured and intelligent player, and he was known for his thoughtful and insightful approach to the game. He was an avid reader, and his interest in philosophy and literature influenced his playing style and his approach to the game.

In 1964, at the age of 37, Blanchflower retired from professional football to become a journalist and a television commentator. He continued to be involved in football, however, and later served as a manager for a number of clubs, including Northern Ireland and Chelsea.
