Andoni Goikoetxea Profile

Legendarily aggressive Spanish centre-back who's style of play earned him one of football's most descriptive nicknames, the Butcher of Bilbao. His infamy was mainly down to two incidents against two of Barcelona's biggest talents of the early 1980s - Bernd Schuster and Diego Maradona. Both endured length spells out of the game after being on the end of a Goikoetxea challenge. He was a.so one of the main antagonists in another match between Bilbao and Barcelona, the 1984 Copa del Rey final that would see a mass brawl break out and saw Goikoetxea kick Maradona in the chest. We're not sure if this is true, but legend has it that he also kept the football boot that broke Maradona's ankle in a glass box in his home.
