Ünsal began his professional career at the age of 18 when he joined Bursaspor, a Turkish club based in Bursa. Playing as a left-back, he showcased his defensive prowess, displaying great positional sense and the ability to anticipate opposing players' movements. His strong tackling and exceptional work rate quickly earned him recognition, and he became an integral part of Bursaspor's defence.

In 1996, Ünsal's talent caught the attention of the legendary Italian club Inter Milan, which signed him to bolster their defensive line. Although his time at Inter Milan was relatively short-lived, it was an important stepping stone in his career, as he had the opportunity to learn from experienced players and compete in one of Europe's top leagues. Ünsal's time at Inter Milan helped him refine his skills and gain a deeper understanding of the tactical aspects of the game.

Following his stint in Italy, Ünsal returned to Turkey and joined Galatasaray, one of the country's most successful and popular clubs. It was at Galatasaray where he truly made his mark and became a household name among football fans. The club's manager, Fatih Terim, recognized Ünsal's versatility and deployed him in various positions, including left-back, left midfield, and even as a central midfielder.

Ünsal's ability to adapt to different roles on the pitch was instrumental in Galatasaray's success during this period. He played a crucial role in the team's triumph in the UEFA Cup in 2000, where they defeated Arsenal in the final. In addition to his club success, Ünsal also represented Turkey on the international stage. He made his debut for the national team in 1995 and went on to earn 44 caps, representing Turkey in major tournaments such as the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup.
