Football's Yo-yo Clubs

A look at some of football's most notorious yo-yo clubs, who became famous for constantly going up and down the leagues, promoted and then relegated, again and again, year after year...

SK Brann - Norway - 1979 to 1986

Norwegian club SK Brann became world record holders in the 1980s when they managed eight consecutive relegations and promotions between the country's top two tiers. Having been relegated in 1979, it wasn't until 1987 that Brann eventually managed to break the cycle, finally surviving the drop from Divisjon 1 when they finished a single point ahead of the relegation play-off places.

Dutch football club FC Volendam are known as the Heen-en-weer club (literally, the to-and-fro club). From 1959 they have been up-and-down, to-and-fro, and the only time they had a stable period in the Eredivisie was an eleven year run between 1987 and 1998. Volendam's last relegation was in 2009 and they've been unable to bounce back since.

Whilst they may have never been Eredivisie Winners, all this yo-yo-ing has meant that they hold the record for the most Eerste Divisie titles, with six.

West Bromwich Albion - England - 2002 to 2010

Season Outcome
2002 West Bromwich Albion promoted to the Premier League
2003 West Bromwich Albion relegated to the Championship

2006 West Bromwich Albion relegated to the Championship
2008 West Bromwich Albion promoted to the Premier League
2009 West Bromwich Albion relegated to the Championship
2010 West Bromwich Albion promoted to the Premier League

When the Baggies were promoted on the final day of the season in 2002 amid delirious scenes at the Hawthorns, little did they realise what an emotional football roller coaster they were about to embark upon over the next nine seasons!

The only two seasons that didn't involve promotions and relegations were still pretty tumultuous - 2004-05 saw them pull off 'the great escape' as they became the first Premier League club to avoid relegation having been bottom at Christmas, whilst 2006-2007 saw them lose the Championship play-off final to Derby County.
