  • 18th October 1871 - 12 clubs agreed to enter the inaugural English FA Cup. The clubs were: Barnes, Civil Service, Clapham Rovers, Crystal Palace, Hampstead Heathens, Harrow Chequers, Harrow School, Lausanne, Royal Engineers, Upton Park, Wanderers, Windsor Home Park.
  • 18th October 1907 - Atalanta were formed in the beautiful city of Bergamo, taking its name from a female character in Greek mythology. Nicknamed La Dea (the Goddess), they're one of the most successful provincial teams in Italy.
  • 18th October 1908 - The first Milan Derby took place in Copa Chiaso.
  • 18th October 1961 - Struggling Stoke City spent £3,500 on a 46 year-old. He immediately puts 27,000 on the gate and plays for them until he's 50! His name? Stanley Matthews.
