Martin Petrov is a former Bulgarian footballer who had a successful career both at club and international level. He is widely regarded as one of the best Bulgarian footballers of his generation, known for his exceptional technical ability and his explosive pace on the field.

Petrov began his professional career in his native Bulgaria, playing for CSKA Sofia between 1996 and 1999. He quickly made a name for himself as a talented winger and was soon snapped up by German side VfL Wolfsburg. Petrov spent four seasons at Wolfsburg, helping the club to achieve promotion to the Bundesliga in 1999-2000 and establishing himself as a regular starter in the first team.

In 2003, Petrov was signed by Spanish giants Atletico Madrid for a reported fee of €12 million. He spent two seasons at Atletico, making 63 appearances and scoring 11 goals, before moving on to Manchester City in 2007. Petrov quickly established himself as a fan favourite at City, thanks to his exceptional skill and his ability to score spectacular goals. He scored 10 goals in his first season with the club, and followed that up with 8 goals in the 2008-09 season.

Despite his impressive performances at City, Petrov was plagued by injuries throughout his time at the club. He suffered a serious knee injury in 2008 that kept him out of action for several months, and he also missed several games during the 2009-10 season due to a hamstring injury. Despite his injury troubles, Petrov remained a key player for City and helped the club to achieve a top-four finish in the Premier League in 2009-10.

After leaving City in 2010, Petrov had spells with Bolton Wanderers, Espanyol, and CSKA Sofia before retiring from professional football in 2014. He also represented the Bulgarian national team on 90 occasions, scoring 19 goals. Petrov was known for his exceptional technical ability, his pace, and his ability to score spectacular goals. He was a fan favourite at all of the clubs he played for and was widely respected for his professionalism both on and off the pitch.
