During his time at Dynamo Kiev, Zavarov helped the team win five Soviet Top League titles, four Soviet Cups, and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1986.

In 1988, Zavarov transferred to Italy, joining Juventus FC. His time in Italy was marked by mixed success, as he struggled to establish himself in the team due to intense competition for places. However, he did win the UEFA Cup with Juventus in 1990, adding another trophy to his collection.

After a brief stint at Sevilla FC in Spain, Zavarov returned to Ukraine in 1993 to play for Metalist Kharkiv, where he finished his playing career. Despite his advancing age, Zavarov continued to impress on the pitch, displaying the same technical ability and creative flair that had made him famous earlier in his career.

Zavarov's international career was also remarkable. He made his debut for the Soviet Union national team in 1982 and went on to represent Ukraine after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He played in two World Cups, helping the Soviet Union reach the round of 16 in 1986 and Ukraine reach the quarter-finals in 1994. He also played in the 1988 European Championship, where he helped the Soviet Union reach the final.
