  • 2nd January 1921 - Brazilian club Cruzeiro were formed in Belo Horizonte by members of the city's Italian community. They were originally named “Società Sportiva Palestra Italia”.
  • 2nd January 1939 - The Old Firm match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox attracted 118,567 - the record attendance for a British league match. Rangers won the match 2:1.
  • 2nd January 1971 - 66 people tragically lost their lives in the Ibrox disaster at the Old Firm match between Rangers and Celtic.
