  • 5th January 1952 - Uli Hoeneß - The lightning-fast German forward gave away the penalty against Johan Cruyff in the opening minutes of the 1974 World Cup final and missed West Germany's final penalty in the 1976 European Championships final but still won Euro'72 and World Cup'74. He had nine years at Bayern Munich but had to retire at 27 because of a knee injury.
  • 5th January 1960 - Glenn Strömberg - The Swedish midfielder was a legend for Atalanta, starring for the Nerazzurri from 1984 to 1992.
  • 5th January 1976 - Diego Tristán - The Spanish striker had some great seasons at the Estadio Riazor as part of that quality Deportivo La Coruña side of the early 2000s.



Football Events - 5th January

  • 5th January 1963 - The big freeze caused 29 of 32 FA Cup 3rd Round matches to be postponed. As the freeze continued, Lincoln v Coventry was postponed 15 times in total!
  • 5th January 2000 - Pele was voted the Player of the 20th Century. 2nd was #Cruyff. 3rd was #Beckenbauer. The International Federation of Football History and Statistics voted for it by the way.
