As you can see from our graphic above, the winners of the Argentine football league is harder to show than most other football leagues because they've always liked to do things a bit different over there. Why have one Championship in a year when you can run two? Or some years even fit in a third!

Things have settled down again in recent years and they now have the Campeonato as the single title in one season, whereas in previous years Argentina had the Torneo Inicial and Torneo Final (initial and final tournaments), the Torneo Apertura and Torneo Clausura (opening and closing tournaments) and back in the 1970s the Campeonato Nacional and Campeonato Metropolitano.

The reason is often cited that the Argentine football league has too many teams in it for every team to play each other twice, but not big enough for everyone to play each other just once without having to invent another tournament! Whatever the reasoning, the Argentine Primera División continues to be one of South America's toughest, as highlighted by the number of Copa Libertadores winners in it's midst, ten at the last count, making it by far the most successful league in the competition's history.

Whilst the Argentinian football league has a wide range of clubs who've won the variety of league titles over the years, it's still River Plate and Boca Juniors who dominate, both having won nearly twice as many titles as the third most successful club, Racing. The two other members of Argentina's traditional "Big Five" (in Spanish, the "Cinco Grandes"), Independiente and San Lorenzo de Almagro, are the fourth and fifth most successful Argentine football league clubs.
