Ramaz Shengelia Profile


Ramaz Shengelia is a former Georgian footballer who had a successful career in the 1970s and 1980s. He was born on January the 1st, 1957, in Kutaisi, Georgia.

Shengelia started his professional career with FC Torpedo Kutaisi, a football club based in his hometown of Kutaisi. He quickly established himself as a key player for the team and was soon scouted by Dinamo Tbilisi, the biggest football club in Georgia. In 1977, Shengelia signed with Dinamo Tbilisi, where he would spend the next eleven seasons.

During his time at Dinamo Tbilisi, Shengelia was a prolific goalscorer and a key player for the team. He helped the club win the Soviet football league in 1978 and was twice named as the Soviet Footballer of the Year, in 1978 and 1981. Shengelia also played a key role in Dinamo Tbilisi's successful run in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in the 1980/1981 season, when they beat East German outfit Carl Zeiss Jena 2:1 in the final. Even though Shengelia didn't score in the final, he was the top scorer in the competition with six goals.
