The Belgian football league is one of the oldest in Europe, with the first championship being held way back in 1895. The modern era has seen some great Belgian youngsters coming through the league, only for the clubs to have these talents stripped from them by the big wealthy leagues of England, Spain, Italy and France. It wasn't always this way though, back in the 1970's and 1980's the likes of RSC Anderlecht and Club Brugge were amongst the strongest clubs in Europe, Anderlecht being both UEFA Cup winners and UEFA Cup Winners Cup winners, whilst Club Brugge came close to joining the list of European Cup winners in 1978, losing narrowly to Liverpool in the final at Wembley.

In terms of Belgian league titles, Anderlecht are the standout club by some distance, winning more than twice as many titles as their closest rival Club Brugge.

In 2016 it was rebranded as the Belgian First Division A, from its previous name, the Belgian Pro League.
