German Bundesliga Winners
BUNDESLIGA WINNERS 1964-2023
Translating as "National League", the Bundesliga was formed in 1963. It was Germany's first unified national football league, up until then the German football championship consisted of regional leagues and national play-offs.
After its inception, it took Bayern Munich five years to win their first Bundesliga title, but since then the Bavarian giants have completely dominated the competition, winning more than half of the Bundesliga titles.
The 1990's were great for competition as 1. FC Köln only actually won four titles during the decade, even the 2000's weren't too bad as Borussia Dortmund, Werder Bremen, VfB Stuttgart and VfL Wolfsburg all won Bundesliga titles, but the last decade has seen only a brief challenge from Borussia Dortmund, as the Bundesliga has worryingly followed the one-club dominance of other European leagues such as France (Paris Saint-Germain, Ligue 1 winners every year), Italy (Juventus, Serie A winners every year) and Scotland (Celtic, Scottish Football League winners every year). It's a real shame as the German Bundesliga has some powerful, historic clubs in their ranks such as Borussia Dortmund, Hamburger SV, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt, Schalke 04, Werder Bremen, VfB Stuttgart and 1. FC Köln, many of whom have been European Cup winners or runners-up, or UEFA Cup winners, but none of them seem able to provide a long-lasting challenge to Bayern Munich before their best players are snapped up and they have to start rebuilding again. That said, the Bundesliga is still a great league, with fantastic stadiums, atmospheres and fan culture, and it's a league that really promotes the development of young footballers and coaches.
